Blast a solid warm-up
Spend a little bit more time than usual on the pre-run warm-up to ensure all of the major muscle groups and joints are suitably toasty before venturing out.
Tackle the pre-run routine indoors, if possible, and work on dynamic stretches rather than static holds. These include footballer-style leg swings, lunges and on-the-spot boxer shuffles that help to stretch and warm muscle simultaneously.
Garry Kerr, Head of Operations and Training at British Military Fitness, told me: “It is essential you stay as warm as possible during your sessions, meaning an energetic warm up is required to raise the heart rate and body temperature as well as giving your body the right preparation for the rest of the session”.
