Modern skateboarding may have originated in the sunny climes of California, but, as we all know, it’s now spread across the four corners of the globe. Take the UK, where the sport broke out back in the seventies, before absolutely exploding in the late eighties and early nineties. Since then a subculture has grown up which is on a par with that of any country in the world.
To see the masters of the British scene in action for yourself, have a look at this Sidewalk X adidas Skateboarding ‘Touring’ team video. It features Benson, Nick Stansfield, Domas Glatkauskas, Darius Trabalza and the rest of the three stripe team busting some seriously sweet moves across the skateparks and streets of good old Blighty.
There will almost certainly be at least a decent half-pipe in any UK town, probably a whole skatepark. If the local council hasn’t stumped up for one, you can bet the local skaters will have sorted out a few cheeky ramps for themselves, minimum. And they’ll be putting the local car parks, shopping centres and underpasses to good use any chance they get.
So if you think all the best skateboarding happens out in California where there’s enough sunshine to put the spray tan industry out of business, watch this video and think again. These guys can hold their own against any of the world’s top crews, and while they might lack a legend of the calibre of, say, Tony Hawk or Mark Gonzales, they can still rip it up with steeze to spare. Makes you proud to be British!
