Finding a pair of ski gloves that you can rely on – whether you find yourself in -20°C skiing some of the finest powder around, or rigging up an abseil high in the alpine – is a pretty tricky task. Many gloves out there simply can’t hack the stresses of constant use, while others don’t offer adequate insulation for ‘real’ winter conditions. This is where the Impulse Glove comes in. They’re a pair of gloves that, as Black Diamond puts it, are “designed for those that like to rip”.

Build

Black Diamond’s main goal in designing the Impulse Gloves was to create a pair of bombproof gloves that’ll keep your digits cosy and – most importantly – dexterous, even when the mercury begins to dip well into the negatives. BD has achieved this thanks to a premium build quality that’s made up of some of the best materials in the business.

Starting with the most obvious, the whole of the glove is wrapped up in goat leather. This leather has been designed, first of all, to create an extremely durable construction while also keeping the dexterity up to an impressive standard. It’s particularly impressive when you consider how much insulation and waterproofing is packed into the gloves.

Speaking of which, the Impulse Gloves feature 200g PrimaLoft Gold Cross Core insulation on the back. If you’re unaware, Gold Cross Core is an insulation material that combines regular PrimaLoft material with AeroGel (the same stuff they use to warm NASA spacesuits). This results in values up to 52 percent warmer than competitive insulation.

Looking at the palms, Black Diamond has made use of two-layers of leather to help boost durability in this high wear area. There’s also 80 grams of PrimaLoft’s Gold Eco Insulation, with ‘Grip Control’, sitting under that beefed-up leather. Further reinforcement is also given through EVA panelling on the back of the hands and thumb to add protection, which we always find useful when you’re skiing tree lines with low branches.

Then, finally, Black Diamond has given the Impulse glove that waterproof seal of approval thanks to a 100% waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex membrane that sits behind the toughened leather outer.

Other handy features we love include a neat, low profile, neoprene cuff that’s been designed to shut off any unwanted draughts and, most importantly, stop any powder from getting in through the cuffs. You’ve also got a standard wrist leash to, hopefully, save you from losing these pricey gloves.
