Taking the acclaimed ISPO award in 2021, the new and updated Belle range shows us the levels of research and design the team at Nordica go through in designing a new ski.  The range comes in three different widths – 72, 78 and 84 mm – and feature a totally unique shape and sidecut that have been designed with a women’s shape and posture in mind.

What’s more exciting is that the Belle range features a totally new bit of technology from Nordica – Double Core Technology – which makes use of two separate core materials that are able to flex independently to provide improved flex, stability and dampening.

Nordica Belle DC 78 Build

Double Core Technology features two separate wood cores, made up of Poplar and Beech, that sandwich a dampening rubber layer. This technology, theoretically, removes the need for an overly-powerful metal layer in favour of a damper, and therefore smoother, wood core to create a flex profile that’s better designed for women’s needs.

This core material was the result of countless interviews and focus groups with female skiers around the world. The research highlighted the need for more female-dedicated ski products (and technologies) that enhances the female build.

Another product of all this female R&D came in the form of a totally redesigned stance thanks to a new and improved binding plate design. By lowering the centre of the ski by 2 mm, the heel section of the binding plate sits lower on the ski. The plate has also been shortened which, when combined with the lower heel, gives the skier a more neutral, centred position on the ski rather than an aligned plate which typically throws the weight of the skier forward into an unbalanced position.

“The shorter binding plate lets the skis flex to stay on a more natural curve”

Nordica say they undertook morphological (morphological: relating to the form or structure of things) research to discover that the length of the “female skiers’ feet are generally shorter” (who knew); this meant that they could shorten the binding plate. The shorter binding plate lets the skis flex to stay on a more natural curve, in comparison to a longer normal binding plate that restricts the flex of a shorter ski.

Nordica Belle DC 78 Shaping

The Belle DC 78 features a traditional piste shape and rocker profile. You’ve got a standard touch of rocker in the tips with a flat tail. All the power generated by the Double Core Technology is further boosted through a large section of camber underfoot. The traditional shaping continues with the sidecut, which results in a medium (14.5 metre) turn radius for the 162 cm length.

Who Is The Nordica Belle DC 78 For?

It’s great to see more and more women-specific technologies coming to the industry. The combination of a smooth flex rating, comfortable stance and well-rounded sidecut make the Belle DC 78 an ideal pair of resort skis for women who love to rip the pistes.
