Anyone who’s watched a good snowboarding movie before will know that you don’t just watch it with your eyes, you watch it with your ears as well. We don’t mean that in a literal sense of course; outside of a portrait by Picasso we’re yet to see a person with eyeballs in their ears. No, what we’re trying to say is that the music’s important man. You just can’t make a decent sandwich without bread (trust us, we’ve tried). In all the very best snowboarding films, the music is the bread within which the tasty snowboard filling sits and The Fourth Phase is no exception.
We went to The Fourth Phase screening in London the other night (read The Fourth Phase review here), and we’re happy to report that the soundtrack has some absolute bangers on it. Travis Rice’s latest snowboarding epic, which deals with scientific stuff like hydrological cycles, has a phenomenal original score by Kishi Bashi (a pseudonym for K. Ishibashi). This score is punctuated by a soundtrack where the belters just keep on coming. Fans of The Art of Flight’s soundtrack, for example, will be pleased to know that M83 are back again with their song ‘Un Nouveau Solei’. Anyhow, that’s enough chat from us, see below for our rundown of some of the musical highlights in The Fourth Phase.
