Update: So it seems after much umming and ahhing that Shaun White will now not be competing. Despite travelling to Aspen he subsequently pulled out of both the Slopestyle and Superpipe events.

The will he won’t he tale of Shaun White’s attendance at the Winter X-Games 2014 has taken another turn after the most successful X-Games competitor ever decided that he would like to come after all.

Earlier this week it was reported that the American Flying Tomato would be pulling out of the Aspen show-piece in order to prepare and avoid injury ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi which kick off just a week after the curtain falls on Winter X-Games XVII.

Speaking last Sunday, White told ESPN that: “So far, the plan is still not to attend X, especially considering how much work this has been to qualify for the Olympics.”

Having never missed a Winter X-Games there seems to have been change of heart for the defending Superpipe champion. The American has now told organisers that he will in fact be competing in both the Superpipe and Slopestyle disciplines over the coming weekend.

Shaun White has dominated the X-Games since winning his first gold in 2003 having won the gold at the last seven X-Games, setting a perfect score back in 2012 along the way.

As well as ruling the X-Games, Shaun White is also the reigning Halfpipe champion at the Olympics having won gold in Turin in 2006 and Vancouver four years ago and he’s clearly keen to win three in the row at the Olympics along with a prospective sevenpeat at the Winter X-Games.

Having struggled and recovered from niggling ankle injuries over the last few months, White is now carrying a shoulder ailment – no doubt aggravated by an impressive crash at the Mammoth Grand Prix last weekend. It remains to be seen if White’s body can keep up with his ambition.
