If we can conveniently ignore that the surf industry is actually disappearing faster than the polar ice caps, a job in the surf industry still has some rewards.

Gone are the days of Mentawai boat trip sales meetings (now they are more likely held in a conference room in a services hotel off the M5) but in theory, working for a company that promotes surfing should mean you surf more.

“KEEP RINGING COMPANIES UNTIL YOU GET A JOB… OR A RESTRAINING ORDER”

You should for the most part also be working with like minded souls who have some type of passion for the ocean, rather than spreadsheet-loving dweebs who usually you would’t cross the road for. But how to get a job?

Well, as in most cases it’s not who you know, but what marketing executive you know. Hard work never goes astray and sticks out in an industry where the work ethic rates just below the ability to drink beer in terms of employability.

Finally perseverance is key. Simply target the remaining companies still financially viable and keep ringing until you get a job or a restraining order.
