Surfer vs. Shark: Could ‘The Shallows’ Starring Blake Lively Be This Year’s Most Nerve-Shredding Film?

This looks a little bit more stressful than your average Gossip Girl episode.

Despite ongoing talks between representatives of the surfing world and the sharking world, there remains an unbearable level of tension between the two sides. Last year, of course, Mick Fanning whipped up a storm when he punched a shark in the face during a surfing comp in South Africa.

The shark hated that punch (nobody likes getting one on the nose), the surfers loved it, and the people who always bang on about toasters killing more people per annum than sharks presumably muttered something about how dangerous toasters are.

‘The Shallows’, which stars Blake Lively from Gossip Girl, tells the story of a surfer who suffers a shark attack. The surfer, who gets stranded a short distance from shore, must then confront the lurking shark in an ultimate battle of wills. The trailer reminds us of a good old-fashioned Mexican stand-off…but with sharks and surfers in place of gurning cowboys.

While the film trailer definitely contains some silly moments, that over-the-top shark leap for example, it’s easy to see how much potential there is here for some truly nerve-shredding set-pieces. Surfer vs Shark. Shark vs Surfer. The ocean’s ultimate confrontation; one that’s, and we can only speculate here, nothing whatsoever like your standard episode of Gossip Girl.
