Mark Cavendish, Jessica Ennis and Alastair Cook were all on the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) list of 2011. To all the non Brits out there, an MBE is essentially the third highest ranking given to members of the Commonwealth for their services to the public – a pretty big deal for us and something that’s reserved for those who have done a bloody good job at giving back to society one way, or another
“Tom … has managed to turn his love and passion of surfing into something that can do good for those most in need”
Also on the 2011 honours list was one Tom Hewitt, who, given the massive levels of inequality and poverty plaguing South Africa, has managed to turn his love and passion of surfing into something that can do good for those most in need – the street children – with his charity Surfers Not Street Children.
With this in mind, the team over at Surfdome have drafted in Tom – CEO and founder of Surfers Not Street Children – for an hour long live Q&A to chat about everything his charity has been up to. Fighting South African inequality, employing royals as volunteers and amassing an impressive following of professional surfers, Tom has been there, done that and most certainly bought the T-shirt.
If you’ve got any questions that you’d like to throw Tom’s way, then drop a comment on the Instagram post below to make sure they’re aired during the live stream. Otherwise, we’ll see you over on the Surfdome Instagram account tomorrow @ 19:00 (GMT).
