Google Earth Virtual Reality Has Arrived And It’s Here To Change The Way You See The World

Is this going to be the budget travel option of the future?

At the start of this year, before 2016 turned into the shit-show to end all shit-shows, we got an exciting insight into the future of action sports in virtual reality. It seemed to us at the time that the future, a future we’ve only ever seen in sci-fi, was wiping its shoes on the doormat at the entrance of our lives. Pretty soon, we figured, the future would be sitting in our lounge; drinking our tea, eating our biscuits, and changing things forever.

The introduction of Google Earth VR looks set to confirm our prediction. Tech is here to stay and looks set to revolutionise the ways we experience travel. For core adventurers, the thought of exploring the entire world from a sofa might sound like nonsense but in the years to come it could be a whole new mode of “transport” for the up and coming generations.

This short video, uploaded to YouTube on the 16th of November, gives us a glimpse into the extent Google Earth VR could be about to shake things up. Imagine scoping out far-flung destinations before visiting them, standing atop the world’s tallest mountains, soaring through space, and immersing yourself in cities you’ve only ever dreamed of visiting but never had the chance to. Well, virtual reality could make it a possibility. Virtual reality could make it so.

Of course, in its current form, it probably won’t beat physically going to places in real life but who knows what technological innovations are just around the corner? Yeah, we think this thing could be a game-changer (or at least the thing that comes before the thing that changes the game). Hold onto your hats, people. Adventure, as we know it, might never be the same again.

Google Earth VR is available now on Steam for the HTC Vive.
