9. Alhambra, Spain
Located in Granada, Spain, Alhambra was originally constructed in 889 as a relatively small fortress, before being turned into a mid-11th century wonder by the Moorish empire and converted into a royal palace in 1333.
The Islamic palace was built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the overwhelming beauty of the place is said to have inspired much of the arts and culture of the area both at the time of conception and ever since.
