The famous spot where Russell Crowe revealed he was not just a talented gladiator, but actually “Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife”, and seeking vengeance in this life or the next.
Or was that just a film? Either way, this place is badass.
This is one of the most fascinating places on the planet when it comes to human-interest history, steeped in the gruelling yet enthrallingly bloody history of the Romans and their rather questionable choice of entertainment. Nevertheless, it’s probably still a more humane use of a stadium than the use of Wembly for a sold out One Direction gig.
