The incident happened at El Tatio geysers in the north of the country

More tragic news involving travellers trying to take dramatic photos in exotic locations… this time coming from El Tatio geysers in northern Chile. A 68-year-old Belgian woman fell into one of the boiling-hot geysers, while trying to photograph it earlier in the week. She suffered life-threatening burns, while her husband was also scalded trying to rescue her. Our thoughts are with her and her family.

The incident isn’t part of the growing trend of extreme selfies, as she was taking a shot of the geyser itself, but it is still another example of the dangerous risks people take in questing the perfect photograph.

The El Tatio Geysers are a famous and beautiful spot so it’s not surprising that Instagram is full of selfies taken there, such as the shot above, which is not of the injured party. Just be careful out there.
