When Is Sailing On At The Rio 2016 Olympics?

Sailing at the Olympics has grown in popularity over the past twenty years, particularly with the rise of the internet making it easier to broadcast the regattas to the world.

But when will the sailing events be broadcast on TV, I hear you cry?

The Games kick off on Friday 5 August 2016 with the Opening Ceremony. The BBC will be broadcasting all of the events (including running, cycling, etc.) live from Rio across TV, radio, online and the BBC Sport mobile app.

Sailing is currently scheduled to run from Monday 8 August to Friday 19 August, depending on weather conditions.

You can see the full Olympic sailing schedule below. This might change nearer the time.


There are ten races per Olympic class (15 races for the 49ers). Sailors can discard their worst race result from these ten races. Then the top ten boats in each class move onto the Medal Race. This counts for double points which are added to their overall score. The sailors with the lowest score wins.
