Brand new for the 2022 winter season, the Dynastar M-Free 99 slots into Dynastar’s all-new M-Line of touring skis. The M-Line is then split between the M-Free and M-Pro lineups. The M-Free range was new for last season (but we’re not really counting last season, right?) –  and with waist widths of 108 and 118, they’ve been designed to slot into Dynastar’s freeride/freestyle category.

The Dynastar M-Free 99 sits as the narrowest ski in the M-Free lineup and, as Dynastar put it, they promise “fast-paced descents, kick turns between pine trees and wild sessions beside the piste.” All we know is it’s got some pretty big boots to fill given they’re replacing the Legend 96 and Cham 97 range of skis.

Dynastar M-Free 99 Build

In creating the M-Lines of skis, Dynastar went back to the ski construction drawing board. What they came up with was a pretty interesting way of constructing the core. Featuring Dynastar’s Hybrid Core technology, the M-Free 99 features Poplar and PU laminates as core material.

Poplar has been used in the core for the same reasons many other ski manufacturers do: to provide a balance of durability, responsiveness and power directly underfoot. PU (the same stuff most ski boots are made from) has been called on to give the ski suppleness and dampening without adding too much extra bulk to the ski. The PU sections feature in the tips and tails, and out to the edges underfoot.

Sitting above this wooden section of the hybrid core is a fibreglass laminate that Dynastar has shaped to surround the core. This fibreglass further boosts the power of the skis, while saving weight towards the tips where it’s not required.

Dynastar M-Free 99 Shaping

The M-Free 99, comes with a fair amount of tapering in the tips. This tapering will help to keep them loose and manageable in fresh snow, especially when you combine it with the exaggerated rocker profile.

A good amount of rocker both in the tips and tails features on the M-Free 99 – the rocker travels deep into the ski at both ends. We loved this use of a progressive rocker profile in the playful Volkl Revolt 104, and can certainly see why Dynastar have opted for it with this freeride-focused ski. Traditional camber underfoot works to give the skis bite in firm snow and pop when you’re launching off airs.

Who Is The Dynastar M-Free 99 For?

Skiers who are after a pair of skis that can handle their own across the entire mountain, while also being able to mix things up in the air and skiing switch, will really get on with the new M-Free 99. The heavily tapered shape, and long rocker lines also makes this an impressive soft snow performer, especially considering the 99 mm waist width.
