Track cyclists can work up some serious speed when they’re whizzing round in circles. We’re talking around 40-50mph if they can push enough power through their pedals.

When there’s a big spill on a velodrome track then, it can get pretty dramatic, and that was certainly the case last weekend at the Pan American Games in Toronto, where Cuban rider Lisandra Guerra ended up with an 8-centimetre splinter through her right arm.

The incident occurred after Guerra clipped the wheel of Luz Gaxiola while in pursuit of the Mexican rider, with the collision sending the Cuban sliding frightening distances across the race track while Gaxiola rode away unharmed.

The accident interrupted the first heat of Guerra’s sprint quarter-final, and of course led to her withdrawal from the competition when the extent of her injuries became clear.

All in all, you have to give a hell of a lot of credit to Lisandra Guerra here. She seems incredibly unfazed about the fact there’s a giant piece of wood pierced through her arm, and we hope she’s back to full fitness in the not so distant future.
