We’ve all done it, haven’t we? Gone on a camping trip with idyllic images of what it might be like in mind, only to spend the next three days getting hyperthermia in a soggy field and praying for an overly-aggressive squirrel to put us out of our misery.
Berlin’s Hüttenpalast, in the production hall of an old vacuum cleaner factory, might just be the ultimate compromise for people looking to balance the joy of camping with the luxury of being indoors.
The Hüttenpalast, which translates from German as “palace of huts”, is located in the hipster quarter of Neukölln. It’s basically an open-spaced resting place, with an array of seriously funky cabins and caravans replacing the traditional idea of hotel rooms.
The creators of the Hüttenpalast hope that the unusual arrangement will encourage interaction between guests, as well as the sharing of ideas. Whatever the ambition behind the “palace”, we’re definitely hoping to stay here the next time we’re in Berlin.
After spending some time browsing the website, we’re still not entirely sure which hut is our favourite. If, like us, you’re thinking of spending some time at the Hüttenpalast; we can reveal that one night here will cost about 69 Euros.

This is one of those quirky ideas that’s easy to dismiss as a moustache-twiddling attempt at winning cool points, but that manages to win people over with its blatant charm.
If there’s not one of these seriously trendy quasi-hotels in Shoreditch/Dalston/Peckham by the year 2018, we’ll eat your grandparent’s caravan.
