2. P90X

What is P90X?

The brainchild of celebrity trainer Tony Horton, and basing its principles on scientific research, P90X claims to be different from the other DVDs out there. The main USP is that it focuses specifically on individuals and their needs.

The average workout time is 75 mins, 6 days a week –yep, pretty intense

You answer a series of questions and the programme will be created with your own body type/goals in mind. The type of workout you do will depend on your circumstances and P90X will tell you what food to eat, how much, and what to avoid. All a bit Big Brother, eh?!

The full workout series takes 90 days, and is spread over 12 DVDs. The average workout time is 75 mins, six days a week – yep, pretty intense! The only extra equipment you’ll need is resistance bands.

How does P90X work?

You start by figuring out how many calories you need to chow down to keep your body fuelled for optimal performance, while keeping your metabolism boosted for maximum fat loss (don’t worry, they’ll talk you through it).

You’ll then be allocated a wide variety of exercises and training methods,  aimed at improving your overall strength, stabilising your core and burning fat. Each week the focus will change, so its never feels repetitive, and your body gets a chance to recover and grow while you work other muscles. Some of the training types you can expect to find include:

  • Strength training
  • Cardio
  • Stretching
  • Yoga
  • Plyometrics
  • Kenpo Karate

What does it come with?

  • A fitness guide
  • A calendar to track your progress
  • 12 DVDs that demonstrate the correct form for each move

What do you say about P90X?

Thoughts from P90X user John Morgan: “P90X is a great, fun, well organised plan but I would suggest anyone considering this really investigate it first. To get the results you need to be able to commit the time to it and have a complete set of dumbbells or have resistance bands minimum.

“It’s a tough exercise and fitness plan that you must engage with and stick to if you want the results… but if you do it’s well worth it and very enjoyable.”
