Kayaking is not a sport for the faint-hearted. From dropping 50m waterfalls to getting caught in underwater rock crevices, it’s a sport that’s championed by some of the hardiest men and women on the planet.

The USA has produced its fair share of gnarly river flows and waterfall drops – just check out Tyler Bradt’s record-breaking attempt below.

But it’s not all professionals. Often it’s the unsuspecting tourists and kayak fishermen that get caught in some of the sketchiest situations. Just check out the kayaking video below of a humpback whale breaching on top of two poor tourists’ kayak.

1) KAYAKING DOWN A DRAINAGE DITCH

Fancy kayaking down a drainage ditch at 34mph, anyone? That’s exactly what kayaker Ben Marr did when he came across one such ditch that lead into Lions Bay in British Columbia, Canada. This kayaking video makes it look like so much fun – but man it’s definitely a good way to put a couple of serious dings in your boat. That scraping noise!

2) KAYAKING OVER 70FT FALLS

Ever wondered what it would look like to kayak over a 70ft waterfall? Legend Rush Sturges takes an icy line down the Outlet Falls in Washington, USA in this kayaking video. There’s a reason this guy was named as one of the 20 greatest outdoor athletes by Outside Magazine.

3) KAYAKING WITH LAVA

Kayakers Pedro Oliva, Chris Korbulic and Ben Stookesberry went on an adventure around Hawaii hunting out lesser known rivers and waterfalls – and came across this molten lava field flowing down from Kilauea volcano right into the water. The footage is pretty insane. Would you get that close to molten lava?

4) HUMPBACK WHALE BREACHES ON KAYAKERS

 

Whales don’t exactly ignite fear into the heart of kayakers, but after you’ve watched this kayaking video, you’ll be wary of those giants of the sea forever more.

Two tourists were paddling a sit-on-top kayak just outside Monterey in California when a huge humpback whale breached, capsizing the kayak. Luckily they escaped unscathed.

5) TYLER BRADT MAKES WORLD RECORD DROP OF 189FT

Dropping an 189ft waterfall in a kayak is no mean feat. The world record was set by Pedro Oliva just weeks earlier when he plunged 127ft from the Salto Bello falls in Brazil. But Tyler Bradt knew he could go bigger. Watch this video as he drops the Palouse Falls in Washington, USA. Despite taking a massive hit, he paddled away with just minor injuries.

6) KAYAKING IN NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is basically a paradise for kayakers – a country filled with waterfalls and gnarly river flows. This GoPro edit follows Rush Sturges and Ben Brown as they explore New Zealand by river.

Check them hucking themselves off some of the most dangerous waterfalls in the world. It’s pretty damn impressive.

7) BIG WAVE KAYAKING LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE

Surfing is the only sport that takes on big waves, right? Wrong. Pro kayaker Tao Berman swapped rivers for the open ocean when he decided to take on big wave kayaking. Watch as he drops into these monster waves at Nelscott Reef in Oregon, a notorious big wave spot.

“It’s hard to put into words what it’s like when you see somebody die.” This is exactly how kayaker Rush Sturges felt when he saw his friend Jared get caught in a sieve, unable to free himself. A sieve is a narrow opening where water is forced underneath a rock. Luckily Jared makes it out alive, but it is a seriously close call!
