Bratz Dolls
Bratz Dolls
Nothing screams skateboarding like dolls right?
For a vacuous, unrealistic and oversexualised toy, Bratz almost makes a valid point at the start of this commercial when a ‘skater dude’ is blown away as a girl drops into a halfpipe.
Having briefly flirted with sexual equality, Bratz gets back to what it does best: patronising young girls.
Our skating heroine is relegated to doing ‘Fashion Flipping Wheelies’ and ‘Wildstyle 360s’ with a tatty plastic version of the real thing, reminding us that girls really prefer to play with a watered down imitation of skating, instead of doing it for real.
This is one of the worst crimes in skate advertising, not just misrepresenting the sport but keeping stereotyped, outdated ideas alive that could be discouraging the next Leticia Bufoni from ever picking up a real board.
