Meet Gianmarco: A Man Who’s Fallen In Love With His Skateboard

'I don't want to meet a good lady, because I want to live without pressure...'

Picture the scene: A man with a hip facial hair is skateboarding though one of the coolest cities on Earth. He’s a man in love. So deeply in love that his every word is about the object of his affection. And the much armoured object in question? A skateboard.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this sounds like the latest independent cinema project of Joaquin Phoenix. The kind of silly movie your cool mate that likes Finnish hip-hop bangs on about for a month. The kind Sophia Coppola would direct, and Kevin Shields would do the soundtrack. Cloë Sevigny would doubtlessly be involved.

But alas, it’s not, This is in fact a genuine skate edit. And not just any skate edit. It might just be the most beautiful one we’ve ever seen.

It’s the work of filmmaker Jonnie Lewis. He headed off to Barcelona where he started shooting bits and pieces on his camera when he bumped into an old friend who put him in touch with a dude called Gianmarco.

Along with hitting up some classic spots in the Catalonian capital, Gianmarco confessed his love for his board, who he called Valentina. Well, kind of.

After the real life Valentia (a human woman and not seven sheets of wood with some wheels stuck to the bottom) and he went there separate ways, with her moving to Italy, Gianmarco feel deeply in love with skateboarding, seeing it as the perfect allegory for the way he once felt about a woman.

It certainly beats sitting in your bedroom , listening to Radiohead, right?

Every skateboard he’s owned since has been named Valentina, so everywhere he goes, every time he pushes, he’s reminded of the girl, what she taught him about life, and tface that he has no desire to meet another woman, because he lives with the memories of Valentina every single day when he steps on his board.

Whatever your take on Gianmarco and Valentia, there is no denying that this is a truly exquisite piece of skateboarding cinema.
