5 of the Best Surfboards For Summer 2019

Here's what you need to be surfing with when you're hitting the beach in the hot months

The clocks have gone forward, and the sun has stopped setting just after lunch. It’s April, and the sunny summer sun is well and truly on its way. Your imagination, no doubt, is currently drifting to picturesque thoughts of idyllic beaches, rolling waves, and that soul-lifting goodness which comes when you’re splashing about in salty seawater. And so, because we can read your mind and know what you want before you know it yourself, here’s a rundown of five of our favourite surfboards for summer 2019.

Channel Islands – Water Hog

When a surfboard has been a Channel Islands best seller for 10 years, you can tell immediately that it’s… *extremely Ron Burgundy voice* … kind of a big deal. The Water Hog is a mini-longboard that bridges the gap between performance and out-and-out longboard. With a low entry rocker for trimming and enough tail rocker to stay high performance, this surfing hog delivers pure pig-in-mud happiness.

Sharp Eye – The Disco

Put on your party flares, get your dancing shoes and your John-Travolta-in-Saturday-Night-Fever white jackets on, and prepare to enjoy the sweet, sweet, majesty that is the Disco surfboard by Sharp Eye. What is it exactly? Well, in a nutshell, it’s a high performance shortboard that’s suitable for most conditions and which is particularly excellent on smaller days.

Pyzel – Phantom

John John Florence. A surfer so good they named him twice. We mention JJ Flo here because the Pyzel Phantom is the step-down version of his favourite board the Ghost. Squash the Ghost down at the nose, and fill that volume into the board’s intestines and you wind up with Phantom. Pyzel have delivered something that looks the business and which can be used in everyday conditions; knee to head high surf recommended. Oh, and that shade of orange? Best colour in the world, mate. Best. Colour. In. The. World.

Maluku – Flying Frog

Picture the scene. You’re paddling in on the Maluku Flying Frog, utterly reassured by its confidence-inducing front end foam. You pump through on your front foot, enjoying the stabilising feel of the mid-section. And then, when the time is right, you weight the back foot and put the Frog on a rail exactly as you would with a shortboard. Sounds nice that, doesn’t it? Sounds like a nice way to spend some time.

Due to the Flying Frog’s rounded tail pin, which gives control through the turn in gutless waves as well as hold and control in the big boy stuff, this surfboard is ideally suited to a beginner surfer looking to step up into the world of shortboard style or a shortboarder looking to keep their rail work tight when there’s not enough happening out there for their usual weapon of choice to be effective.

JS Industries – Blak Box 3

The Blak Box 3 from JS Industries keeps the almost decade-old flame that is the Blak Box DNA burning bright. This, we’re happy to report, is the kind of the surfboard you can use every single day (heck, even when you’re not surfing… do what you want, it’s your surfboard).

Coming in a could-it-beeeee-any-more-classic PU construction, the wide point of the board has been moved forward a tad to give you a bit more under the chest. The knock on effect of this is that the Blak Box 3 has a slightly straighter pulled in swallow tail, something that will give you greater acceleration and glide on the water. For the super, experienced, “I’ve seen it all,” surfers, this is the ideal step-down option. That being said, it’s also more than usable enough for any rookies and intermediates out there looking to get their mitts on an everyday number.
