Pentax K-50 Entry-Level DSLR Travel Camera
Despite their long history of making analogue cameras, Pentax don’t have quite the illustrious reputation of Canon or Nikon when it comes to their digital offerings.
However their cameras are well worth a look, especially in the entry-level DSLR category as they often offer you more bang for your buck.
The K-50 here is a case in point. It may not have as many mega-pixels as the Nikon D3300 but the ISO can be cranked up much higher, to 51,200, meaning it can handle low-light conditions easily (although admittedly shooting at maximum ISO is very grainy).
It also lets you shoot up to 6 frames per second (more than the Nikon’s 5fps) making it great for shooting action sequences in sports like skiing or skateboarding. It’s also weather resistant – a distinct advantage for a travel camera.
Pentax produce a large range of compatible lenses that will give you the flexibility to shoot all manner of different travel subjects – from distant mountains to the “cute local kid close-up” that’s a must for every travel story.
Price: £400
Good for: Shooting in snow or rain, value for money.
Not so good for: Complete beginners.
