More Info

Faction launched their ‘La Machine’ range for the 22/23 season. This range shuns the use of camber in favour of deep rocker lines and a manoeuvrable shape to create a freeride ski that thrives in soft snow conditions. These, the La Machine 2 Mini, are the narrowest skis in the series. They’re an extremely fun touring ski that can take on everything from sun-baked mash, to fresh couloirs.

Faction La Machine 2 Mini Construction

The wood core is made up of a sustainably sourced poplar and beech. This sustainable approach is thanks to the fact that Faction sources have looked to source this wood near their European factories, getting rid of the cost (in carbon) of transporting raw materials around the world. These cores are all, also, FSC accredited, meaning that the forests where the core material comes from are all managed in a sustainable way.

“An extremely fun touring ski that can take on everything from sun-baked mash, to fresh couloirs”

A carbon fibre laminate sits above this sustainable core. And, while carbon isn’t the most friendly to the planet material out there, Faction have called in the use of a bio-based resin that has 35% of its molecular range derived from plant material, to help create this carbon layup.

Faction La Machine 2 Mini Shaping

Now it’s definitely in the rocker profile where this ski gets really interesting. Contrary to what is considered the ‘norm’ for 100 mm waisted all-mountain / touring skis. The La Machine 2 Mini features zero camber underfoot. Instead, Faction has opted towards pressing the skis with extended tip and tail rocker.

“Imagine how easy a rocking horse is to spin, La Machine 2 is just like that”

This two fingers up to the use of camber has been done, in conjunction with a generous rocker profile, to create a pair of skis that are sporting a really easy turn initiation. See it a bit like a rocking horse, and imagine how easy a rocking horse is to spin, La Machine 2 is just like that with a shorter effective edge creating less edge to hook up and catch, creating an extremely surfy feel.

In terms of the shape of the skis themselves, you’ve got a fair bit of tapered tip and tails, with a 99 mm waist which creates a 19m radius for the 177 length we got hold of. This sidecut is an elliptical sidecut, meaning you’ve got a longer radius underfoot and shorter radii towards the tips and tails. What this results in is faster and easier pivoting, thanks to the long radius underfoot, and easier turn initiation thanks to the shorter one stretching out to the tips and tails.

Who Is The Faction La Machine 2 Mini For?

With all this in mind, and considering the weight of these skis, it’s got to be said that La Machine 2 Mini has been designed with off piste skiing in mind. For that reason, we’d recommend pairing the skis with a touring-specific binding, such as the ATK Raider 12, or Marker Kingpin, to get the most out of the weight savings, giving you an extremely fun and pivotable ski in the backcountry.

What Is The Faction La Machine 2 Mini Good At?
