Planks ‘No Skiing On Mars’ Capsule Collection | Review

This rad capsule collection has been built to raise some much needed cash for Protect Our Winters

Why we chose Planks ‘No Skiing On Mars’ Capsule Collection: A team up job between Planks and Protect Our Winters UK, it’s fighting climate change and looks rad.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it until we’re smurf-blue in the face, Planks are class. Founded by Britain’s very own Jim Adlington, just over a decade ago, the brand is a rider-owned clothing company with bucket loads of street cred, a can-do attitude, and a deeply-layered understanding of mountain resort culture and the winter sports lifestyle. We’re not quite at the fanboy stage of running a Planks logo up the flagpole, and shedding a patriotic tear, but we’re probably not too far off that in all honesty. They’re an inclusive, un-snobby, brand doing good stuff ‘on the scene’. We like them a lot.

The ‘No Skiing On Mars’ Capsule Collection is yet another reason, as if we needed another, to big up Planks. It’s a collaborative effort between them and our good friends over at Protect Our Winters UK, it’s been put together with the environment very much in mind, and – what’s more –  everything in it looks seriously hip.

As Planks discuss in their promotional material for the collection, colonies on Mars may well be part of humanity’s future, may well be the thing that keeps the ludicrously wealthy Elon Musk’s brain buzzing when he’s locked in his home office (#EatTheRich), but the Red Planet will never be a place for skiing. As the brand themselves put it: “Earth is our only ski destination; we must protect it!”

The last 10 years have been the hottest on record. By 2050, conservative projections estimate a global temperature rise surpassing two degrees. This will mean shorter winters, reduced precipitation, and ultimately make skiing a more exclusive and inaccessible pastime. Putting aside skiing for a second, an activity we love but one which is (arguably) less important in the bigger existential picture, warming temperatures are also going to have a severe impact on nature, agriculture, and society now and in the years to come. Developing nations, in particular, will be the hardest hit.

The critical crossroads we currently face as species, one that’s only been underlined further by the recent and very alarming report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is why it’s so important our favourite brands step up to the plate to help alter climate change’s rocket-like trajectory and pull us back from the disastrous precipice that we’re now teetering on the edge of.

Through sales of this limited collection, a collection made from Repreve recycled yarn, Planks Clothing aims to raise £5,000 for POW’s Carbon Literacy program. This program is already playing a pivotal role in changing the carbon consumption of individuals and businesses, and is helping POW to fight back against short-sighted and damaging environmental policy. Thanks to POW’s guidance, Planks Clothing has also pledged to reduce its carbon dependency with the goal of becoming carbon neutral.

“Help Planks to help POW save the world this winter”

We could tell you more about the Happy Days Anorak, Easy Rider Pant, Overstock Anorak, Fun-garees, hoodie, t-shirts, mitts and hats that make up this collection but we think the story behind them speaks for itself. They’ll all do the business for you on the piste, at the park, and around the resort and that’s all you need to know. Help Planks to help POW save the world this winter, and rock an incredibly stylish out-of-this-world space pattern while you’re at it. Big fans of this one. We’re confident you will be too
